Elton John and his longtime songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin penned this luscious soft-rock homage to Marilyn Monroe in 1973, eleven years after the iconic star had died of a barbiturate overdose aged 36. "Goodbye, Norma Jeane / Though I never knew you at all / You had the grace to hold yourself / While those around you crawled," begins the much-loved tribute, which was featured on Elton John's seminal 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Over twenty years later, Elton John re-recorded a version of "Candle in the Wind," under the alternative titles of "Goodbye England's Rose" and "Candle in the Wind '97" as an elegy to his late friend, Princess Diana. He changed the lyrics, softened the song's rocky edge with a string quartet and woodwind and brought in famed "fifth Beatle" Sir George Martin to produce the track. He performed "Candle in the Wind '97" at the funeral of Princess Diana, and it became one the best-selling singles in UK chart history.

This is my favorite sing. Not only is it catchy and by my favorite artist, it also has a very deep meaning that begs thinking about and listening to over and over.
