Throughout his career, American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith has addressed his own personal struggles on several songs, opening up about past trauma, heartbreak, and addiction over a canvas of equal parts folk and indie rock music. Such is the case of "Between the Bars," the fourth track from his 1997 third studio album, Either/Or. Written by Elliott Smith and produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, "Between the Bars" is a short folk ballad in which the singer presents an imaginary dialogue between himself and the subject of his addiction, i.e., alcohol and drugs. The song was one of the five Elliott Smith tracks to be featured in the soundtrack of the 1997 drama Good Will Hunting, which exposed the singer-songwriter's music to a much wider audience. In the years that followed, "Between the Bars" became Elliott Smith's best-known song and was covered by the likes of Metric, Madonna, Madeleine Peyroux, and many more.
