Melding his passion for soul and R&B with classic rock and jazzy undertones, the rootsy South Carolina-born balladeer Edwin McCain released his debut album Honor Among Thieves in 1994 and, propelled by the popularity of its single "Solitude," was spurred on to release his second album Misguided Roses in 1997. With this sophomore effort, he scored his first mainstream hit in "I'll Be," which was released as the LP's first single and went to number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. He recorded this acoustic version of the song for third album Messenger. The saxophone-laced album track from Misguided Roses exploded into a pop culture moment back in 1998 when it was featured in the first-season finale episode of hit show Dawson's Creek. Six years later, it popped up on the soundtrack to teen romcom A Cinderella Story, which starred Hilary Duff, Chad Michael Murray, Jennifer Coolidge, and Regina King.
