American singer and actress Eartha Kitt was a massively influential performer. Not only was she a prolific and widely acclaimed pop and big band performer throughout the 1950s and 1960s, but she went on to establish herself firmly in the popular consciousness with her famous portrayal of the villain Catwoman in the 1960s Batman TV show. The unmistakable style she brought to that portrayal is already present throughout the personas she inhabited in her music, which brought elements of cabaret to the stage. “Champagne Taste,” written by Jeanne Burns and David Saxon, is a great example of her style.
