During the early to mid-eighties, country-pop singlehandedly dominated the country charts in the United States. Since the inception of his career, Kentucky native Dwight Yoakam made it his mission to bring back traditional country music to its former glory, developing a genre he dubbed as "hillbilly music." Inspired by country legends Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam achieved his goal in 1986 when his studio debut Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. reached the top of Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. In addition to the hits "Honky Tonk Man," "Guitars, Cadillacs," and "It Won't Hurt," the album also featured a rendition of June Carter's "Ring of Fire." Written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore and originally popularized by Johnny Cash in 1963, "Ring of Fire" is a rockabilly-tinged country song whose lyrics perfectly describe the intense yearning of the early stages of infatuation. Though faithful to the original version, Dwight Yoakam added his own honky-tonk spin on the classic track, which put him at the forefront of the "New Traditionalist" movement.
