After being moved to tears by a live performance of Pino Donaggio's "Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)" at the 1965 Sanremo Festival, Swinging Sixties icon Dusty Springfield set out to create an English version of the song, one that would go on to become the biggest hit of her career and one of her signature songs. Recordings began in March 1966 and the English lyrics were written by Springfield's friend Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell, who was the manager of the Yardbirds at the time. Since none of them understood Italian, they decided to give it their own spin and write an anti-love song that went through various working titles until settling on "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." Shortly after its release as a commercial single, the track shot straight to the top of the UK Singles Chart and peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became incredibly popular across the Atlantic and was later covered by Elvis Presley on his 1970 album That's the Way It Is.
