Dusty Springfield will always be remembered for her 1969 blue-eyed soul knockout, "Son of a Preacher Man," which soared to Number 9 on the UK singles chart and Number 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 in January 1969. The international hit, which was written and composed by American songwriters John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins, is a star-crossed tale of boy meets girl: "Billy Ray was the preacher's son / And when his daddy would visit he'd come along / When they gathered ´round and started talkin' / That's when Billy would take me walkin' / Out through the back yard we'd go walkin' / Then he'd look into my eyes / Lord knows, to my surprise." "Son of a Preacher Man" was featured on Dusty Springfield's fifth studio album Dusty in Memphis (1969). The album didn't hit quite the same highs as the single at the time but in later years exploded into a bona fide classic, inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 and selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" in 2020.
