With her almighty retro-soul voice, Duffy was built for this cover of Motown-influenced, Northern soul-favoring track "Tainted Love" which she recorded in 2009. "Once I ran to you (I ran) / Now, I'll run from you / This tainted love you've given / I give you all a boy could give you / Take my tears and that's not nearly all / Oh, tainted love / Tainted love," she sings effortlessly in the chorus. Originally composed by Ed Cobb, the song was made famous by Gloria Jones in 1964, whose version was released as the B-side of her single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home." "Tainted Love" later blossomed into a huge global hit after being reimagined by UK synthpop duo Soft Cell, who released the definitive version of the track in 1981, changing its key and slowing it down, while enlisting the production prowess of Mike Thorne to craft the electronic reimagining of the song.
