In 1988, Australian rock band INXS had already done what had eluded most musicians from their home country: landing a hit on American radio. With the band having scored their first Top 5 hit in the United States, “What You Need” (from their 1985 album Listen Like Thieves), it would’ve been entirely expected for the group to begin the gradual descent back into obscurity. However, the group would only become more successful with the release of their following album, Kick, in 1988. The multi-platinum album would become the group’s most successful, thanks in part to the single “Never Tear Us Apart.” A tender-hearted ballad co-written by the band’s keyboardist Andrew Farriss and lead singer Michael Hutchence, the song actually started as a blues-inspired number before producer Chris Thomas took it in its eventual direction. “Never Tear Us Apart” reached Number 24 in the UK Singles Chart, and peaked at Number 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
