American singer-songwriter Donald Fagen, better known as the lead singer, co-founder, and co-songwriter of Steely Dan, made his solo studio debut with 1982’s The Nightfly. His solo sound is very much a continuation of his work with Steely Dan, displaying many of the jazz-influenced sounds that were present in his previous work. “New Frontier,” the song that opens side two of the album, is a great example of this. It features catchy pop hooks that made this song a radio success (it was released as the second single from the album) while also maintaining the air of sophistication that was present in Steely Dan’s compositions. The song describes a feeling of longing for adulthood, which would quickly be corrupted by the real world. “New Frontier” was written by Donald Fagen and produced by Gary Katz. The single version of the song was considerably shorter than the album version (3:50 vs. 6:23). “New Frontier” peaked at Number 34 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, as well as Number 70 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
