Don Williams earned his "Gentle Giant" nickname for his unfussy, true-hearted balladry that seemed to contravene his lofty stature. After an initial dalliance with folk-pop and pop groups in the '60s, the Texas-born auteur decided to go it alone in the '70s and began making in-roads towards a solo country career that would ultimately see him inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Following the success of his 1977 album Country Boy – which won the Country Music Associaton's coveted CMA Album of the Year prize in 1978 – he stepped out with his eighth album of countrypolitan postcards, Expressions, in 1978, which featured Johnny Gimble on fiddle and pedal steel guitar from Lloyd Green. The LP was gently set in motion by its mandolin-speckled opener, "I Would Like to See You Again," a yearning, nostalgic love song on which Don Williams conjures the memory of a former lover.
