Who doesn't love a slice of "American Pie"? Stuffed full of cultural references from Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson ("the day the music died") to the iconic American Chevrolet, this timeless classic from Don McLean reads like a history book, surveying nostalgia and the life and death of the American dream with gusto—and rollicking piano. "American Pie" was the opening and title track of Don McLean's second studio album (1971) with this 45 version of the hit single splicing the eight-and-a-half-minute track into an A-side and B-side in order to fit on vinyl. The LP, which was dedicated to Buddy Holly, also contained the chart-topping guitar tribute to Vincent van Gogh, "Vincent." Thirty years after the original song's release, the one and only Madonna turned her attention to "American Pie" for a shorter dance-pop reimagining that was co-produced with William Orbit.
