It was originally popularized by American teen singer Jimmy Boyd, who released it as a single later that year. Describing a scene in which a child witnesses his mother kiss Santa Claus, unaware that the Christmas character is really his father in costume, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" was covered by a whole host of artists in the years that followed, including The Ronettes, The Jackson 5, and more recently, Amy Winehouse.
