Depeche Mode unbottled their trademark potion of deep, dark sensuality on this unconventional orchestral-led love song. Written by Martin L. Gore, "One Caress" encapsulates many of the themes driving the band's 1993 alt-rawk masterpiece Songs of Faith and Devotion, where tongue-in-cheek religious elements collide with gothic romance. "I have to believe that sin / Can make a better man / Well, it's the mood that I am in / That's left us back where we began," croons Dave Gahan artfully. The follow-up to their international breakthrough of 1990, Violator (which contained the band's now-signature hits "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence") eighth studio album Songs of Faith and Devotion became their first studio LP to reach strike number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200 while also ascending to the top of the charts in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland.
