In the early 70s, English hard rock band Deep Purple had something to prove. They had recently re-established themselves with a brand new line-up, and their previous full-length Deep Purple in Rock was hailed by many as a seminal album in the history of hard rock. Renewed and reinvigorated, they headed into the studio in September of 1970 and came out in mid-July 1971 with their fifth album Fireball. The final track to be recorded for Fireball was the blues-influenced stomper Demon’s Eye,” which featured a more muscular sound as well as elements of psychedelia. Like the rest of the album, Demon’s Eye was a group effort, written by Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. The original UK release of the album featured Demon’s Eye as the third track, but the song was omitted from the original US, Canada, and Japan releases. The album marked the first time the band hit Number 1 on the UK Albums chart, selling over a million copies.
