From working in a steel mill to getting a broken nose as a welterweight boxer, Ohio-born Dean Martin tried his hand at several occupations before moving onto territory bands where he gained his singing chops with a number of local outfits in the 1940s, including the Ernie McKay Orchestra. He eventually ventured out as a solo singer in the early 1950s, putting his voice on the map with his debut studio album for Capitol Records, Dean Martin Sings, released in 1953. "Oh Marie" is included on that album, and finds Dean Martin in typically romantic mode as he croons, in both Italian and English, about his leading lady and how, "All the stars in the sky shine for thee." Written by Eduardo di Capua and Vincenzo Russo, with English lyrics by Edward Gardenier, the song brings together Italian and American musical elements and was embraced as a hit when it was released as a single with "I'll Always Love You" in 1954.
