"Kill the Poor" the opening track on the Dead Kennedys' 1980 debut album, introduced the world to the band's furious and fast-faced politicised punk. An acerbic anti-capitalist satire, "Kill the Poor" is a lightning-quick guitar thrasher that delivers its caustic message in just over three minutes. The tongue-in-cheek song fictionalises the destruction of the working class by the neutron bomb and a world in which the super-rich celebrate by getting even richer. "Behold the sparkle of champagne / The crime rate's gone, feel free again / Oh, life's a dream with you, Miss Lily White / Jane Fonda on the screen today," warbles the inimitable Jello Biafra in the chorus. The Dead Kennedys didn't hold back on the uncompromising debut Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables; from the cover depicting police cars on fire during the White Night riots of 21 May 1979 to tracks like "Holiday in Cambodia," the LP kickstarted America's hardcore punk revolution and remains a seminal text of political punk.
