Gleaning influence from the blues and R&B of the '60s, controversial outlaw country iconoclast David Allan Coe started off releasing albums in that vein, beginning with his blues-focused debut album Penitentiary Blues in 1970 and taking in 1973 studio album Requiem for a Harlequin (1973) before galloping towards country with 1974 album The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy for Columbia Records. But he couldn't have got there without the popularity of 1973 track "Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)," which was inspired by Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You," and first released as a single in December 1973 by Tanya Tucker, who scored a number-one hit with the song, delivered as the first single and title track of her album of the same name. The runaway success of the song shone a light on David Allan Coe's songwriting skills and he was subsequently signed to Columbia Records. In 1975, David Allen Coe recorded his own version of the composition for his fourth album Once Upon a Rhyme.

This is actually the 1978 version from the album “Human Emotion”. The 1975 version was from the album “Once Upon a Rhyme”. That version was really good as well. In fact I kind of like that one better I think. Anyhow, just wanted to get you straight on the dates.
