Unapologetically flying the flag for neo-traditionalist country, the late Georgia-born star Daryle Singletary began his career in 1995 with his debut self-titled album and made his presence known on the country charts up until a year before his death in 2018, hitting number 44 with American Grandstand, a collaborative album with Rhonda Vincent. "Old Violin" was among the cover songs he recorded for his fourth studio album That's Why I Sing This Way (2002). Originally written and recorded by outlaw country hero Johnny Paycheck—who cracked the top 20 with the heart-wrenching song in 1986—“Old Violin" is a reflection on life and death. "Tonight I feel like an old violin / Soon to be put away and never played again," he sings. In February 2018, the song took on new meaning as it became the final song Daryle Singletary and his band played during their live set at Cowboy’s nightclub in Lafayette, Louisiana. He passed away unexpectedly on 12 February 2018.
