Opening with the soft, comforting patter of synths and a serenely moonlit feel that evokes late-night drives in the rain, on his soothing, atmospheric 1990 gem, "Rhythm of the Rain", jilted lover Dan Fogelberg sets off with an honest message from his broken heart. "Listen to the rhythm of the falling rain / Telling me just what a fool I've been / I wish that it would go and let me cry in vain / And let me be alone again", he painstakingly sings, with the much-loved platinum-selling singer-songwriter – who passed away from prostate cancer in 2007 – packing a deluge of emotion into this radio-friendly single. Originally performed by doo-wop band The Cascades in 1962, the song was reinterpreted by Dan Fogelberg, included on his eleventh album, The Wild Places – also released in 1990 – and became an easy-listening favorite that reached Number 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart at the time of its release.
