Count Five was one of the leading bands in the American garage rock revolution of the mid-60s. Psychotic Reaction is the title track to their debut studio album Psychotic Reaction (1966), also serving as the album’s lead single. The group first came up with Psychotic Reaction as an instrumental jam, and they played it as such for six months before they decided to add lyrics to it. Psychotic Reaction is a garage rock song with psychedelic elements, featuring several tempo changes and guitar solos that draw influence from acid rock (and would go on to influence the punk movement of the 1970s). The song was written by Kenn Ellner, Roy Chaney, Craig “Butch” Atkinson, John “Sean” Byrne, and John “Mouse” Michalski. It was produced by Hal Winn and Joseph Hooven. It peaked at Number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song would go on to be used in various films such as Less than Zero and Drugstore Cowboy, as well as the HBO TV series Girls. The song was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
