American alternative rock band Concrete Blonde emerged from Los Angeles' vibrant post-punk circuit in the late 1980s. Led by main songwriter and lead singer Johnette Napolitano, the group signed with I.R.S. Records in 1986 and made its debut with an eponymous LP heavily influenced by the sound of The Pretenders. By the time they released the college radio hit "God Is a Bullet," included in their 1989 second full-length Free, Concrete Blonde was at the peak of their powers and eager to break into the mainstream. Decidedly more ominous and broodier than its predecessors, their third album Bloodletting appeared in 1990 and marked a significant shift towards a darker, more brooding sound. Nowhere is this more evident than on the foreboding album opener "Bloodletting (The Vampire)," a sensuous gothic blues number propelled forward by a hard-stomping riff, esoteric imagery, and a powerful chorus.
