Straight From the Heart,” the sixth track on Con Funk Shun's 1981 album, Con Funk Shun 7, moves at a sensual pace, all lithe and low-lit. The falsetto-streaked song, loaded with effusive declarations like "It must be love / For this is nothing that I won't do / For the love of you / From now on / Everything that I have is yours forever," embodies the pure essence of vintage smooth soul. Released in 1981 on Mercury Records, Con Funk Shun 7 – which spawned a Top 20 R&B hit in "Bad Lady" – was the eighth album from the Vallejo, California R&B and funk outfit Con Funk Shun and their 7th of 11 with the label. The group called the album Con Funk Shun 7 to mark its seven members as well as drawing significance from the number seven as representing renaissance and rebirth. Con Funk Shun later enjoyed their own rebirth when their 1982 single "Love's Train" was covered by contemporary super duo Silk Sonic, aka Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars.
