In many ways, the unprecedented popularity of Paul Williams and His Hucklebuckers' 1949 hit single "The Hucklebuck" foreshadowed the advent of rock and roll music in the early 1950s. Originally an instrumental track written by Andy Gibson, the raunchy R&B song originated a dance craze among concert-goers across the nation and singlehandedly thrust Paul Williams into stardom. After the instrumental version topped the R&B charts in the United States in 1949, the song was recorded later that year by Roy Milton with lyrics by Tin Pan Alley lyricist Roy Alfred. In the years that followed, "The Hucklebuck" became a notable crossover success and reached the Top 10 of the pop charts in the US thanks to covers by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and Frank Sinatra. In 1960, a version by American rock and roll singer Chubby Checker peaked at Number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also included in his studio debut, Twist with Chubby Checker.
