The genre-defining soft rock staple "Sailing" was released by American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross in June 1980. Originally included in 1979 his eponymous studio debut, the track was inspired by a friend of his who would take him sailing on his boat during his teenage years. Even though Christopher Cross came up with the main melody quite quickly, it took him over two years to finish the song's bridge. It was chosen as the album's second single after the Michael McDonald-featured "Ride Like the Wind." The track was an astounding success and became Christopher Cross's first chart-topper in both the US and Canada. The following year, "Sailing" won Song of the Year and Arrangement of the Year at the Annual Grammy Awards. Since then, the track became Christopher Cross's signature song and was covered by artists like N'Sync and Barry Manilow. More recently, the song was identified as the most prominent example of yacht rock, a term used for smooth adult-oriented rock with abundant nautical references.
