Elevated by a smouldering guitar solo, "South Dakota" is the second track on Chris Stapleton's fifth studio album Higher, which was produced with the help of Dave Cobb and Chris Stapleton's wife Morgane. Propelled by the single "White Horse," Higher hit number one on the US Top Country Albums chart and landed at number 22 in the UK as well as reaching number three on the US Billboard 200 and cracking the top 10 in the Netherlands, Canada, and Australia. Higher was the follow-up to Chris Stapleton's 2020 Grammy-winning fourth studio album Starting Over, which also won Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.
