Late Soundgarden legend Chris Cornell started off playing "Black Hole Sun" at live shows on an acoustic guitar before fleshing it out and transforming it into the cavernous anthem we know today. Soundgarden's most enduring hit is awash with affecting imagery that, according to Chris Cornell, wasn't actually that deep. It was intended to be surreal and indecipherable, open to interpretation. But its dark-leaning atmosphere can't be denied. "Boiling heat, summer stench / ’Neath the black the sky looks dead / Call my name through the cream / And I’ll hear you scream again", wails Chris Cornell in the song's opening verse. This live version was captured on his 2011 acoustic live album Songbook – which featured songs recorded during his tour of the same name – but the 1994 original from Superunknown gifted the band one of their biggest hits, shooting to the top of US Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and to number two on the Modern Rock chart.
