Zapp employed a toolbox of electronic and machine-led effects, from talk-box to synthesizers, in their pioneering sound that was heavily influential in the electro sub-unit of funk. "Computer Love" is a shining example of the band's trailblazing aesthetic, written by Shirley Murdock, late Zapp Band leader Roger Troutman and his brother Larry Troutman – who both died in an apparent murder-suicide in 1999 – and featuring vocals from Shirley Murdock and Charlie Wilson. Released as the fourth and final single from the band's fourth studio album The New Zapp IV U (1985) – which became the last release before frontman Roger Troutman quit to focus on his solo career – "Computer Love" gave Zapp a top ten R&B hit, rising to number eight on the chart, and became one of their best-known hits. Over the years, the song has been sampled and covered by a range of other artists, reimagined by Janet Kay for her third album, Sweet Surrender(1989), and sampled by everyone from Gucci Mane and Justin Bieber to Usher.
