Originally released as a Christmas-meets-protest song by John & Yoko/The Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir in 1971, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" and its peace-loving message still rings true decades later. The anti-Vietnam War song was written two years after John Lennon and Yoko Ono first began their iconic bed-ins in the name of peace and became the seventh non-Beatles single for John Lennon. In 1998, Céline Dion joined the likes of Andy Williams, Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross in covering the Christmas standard, taking the song to new heights with her traffic-stopping vocal. The Canadian megastar included her rendition of the track on her 1998 festive album These are Special Times; one of the top-selling Christmas albums of all time. However, the song has not aged well. In spite of its plea for peace and optimistic outlook, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" contains several racial slurs in the first verse.
