"Rocky Top" is a song by American bluegrass/country act the Osborne Brothers. It's an energetic bluegrass track with a prominent banjo and slide guitar melody. It was written by country-pop songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, a married couple who composed several hits, most notably for The Everly Brothers, including "Wake Up Little Susie," "Devoted to You," and "Love Hurts." Its lyrics feature a nostalgic longing for the narrator's idyllic and rural hometown of Rocky Top, Tennessee. He longs for the simplicity of rural life, far from the modern woes of pollution and bills. The lyrics also allude to a "wild" love affair with a woman, as well as moonshine, an illegally produced corn-based whiskey common in the rural South. Despite the lyrical allusions to the town of Rocky Top, the Bryants wrote the song in a hotel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Since its composition and release, "Rocky Top" has been selected as one of the official state songs of Tennessee. The Osborne Brothers’ rendition of the track reached number 33 on the US Country charts. "Rocky Top" has been covered by several artists, most famously by Lynn Anderson in 1970 (which surpassed the original, making it to number 16 in the US Country charts). The roster of artists who have also performed "Rocky Top" include country music icon Dolly Parton, singer-songwriter John Denver, and acclaimed jam band Phish.
