The Pennsylvania hard rockers Breaking Benjamin were formed in 1999 by lead singer and guitarist Benjamin Burnley and drummer Jeremy Hummel and launched their career in 2002 with their debut album Saturate. Further honing their metal-led alt-rock aesthetic on their second album, We Are Not Alone, (2004) the band came of age during the mainstream rock explosion in the early '00s and released two more studio albums, Phobia (2006) and Dear Agony (2009), before going on an extended hiatus in early 2010 due to Benjamin Burnley's recurring illnesses. This acoustic twist on the effects and scream-laden lead single from their third album Phobia shows the band in a softer light. "The Diary of Jane" is inspired by 1930s actor Jane Bryan (who also appears in the official music video) and depicts a woman on the verge of a breakdown. The original version is one of the band's most successful tracks and was certified 4× platinum in the US in 2021.
