Golden Boy Bobby Rydell was the smiling face of '50s pop whose influence reigned in the high school corridors of Grease's Rydell High, named in honour of the star. By the early '60s, Bobby Rydell had morphed into a fully-fledged teen idol and "Volare" was released at the height of his fame. Originally recorded by Italian singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno and written by Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno, his recording became the first Grammy winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1958, while its performance at Sanremo Music Festival inspired the concept of the Eurovision Song Contest. The late Bobby Rydell – who died of pneumonia on April 5th, 2022 – went to Number four on the Hot 100 and Number 22 in the UK with his English-language version of the song during the summer of 1960, while his reimagining of "Volare" was also featured on the soundtrack for Richard Wenk's 1986 horror film Vamp.
