Love it or hate it, the breezy, timeless sway of "Don't Worry, Be Happy" has traversed the decades to carve its own indelible pop culture niche. As an a cappella track recorded in an unconventional manner (Bobby McFerrin used his body to make the sounds, scoring the first chart-topper without instrumentation) this reggae mainstay defied conventional wisdom to reach the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1988, also going to number 11 on the Billboard Hot Black Singles chart and number seven on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. At the 1989 Grammy Awards, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" picked up the trophies for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The one-man-band song drew inspiration and meaning from the titular phrase made famous by Indian mystic Meher Baba (1894–1969) and was accompanied by a memorable video featuring Robin Williams and Bill Irwin, which was a hit on MTV.
