"Concrete Jungle" marked a significant turning point for reggae, assuming pride of place as the opening track on a trailblazing album that took reggae out of Jamaica and to an international audience: Catch a Fire by Bob Marley & the Wailers. Released in April 1973, the LP marked the group's fifth to date but their first for Chris Blackwell's iconic Island Records, who was able to generate a buzz about Bob Marley and the Wailers in the UK, particularly among rock fans. The album was recorded with the kind of up-to-date studio gear previously reserved for rock acts and was packaged like a rock album. "Concrete Jungle" is an oft-cited idiom that denotes an uninviting urban area and was written by Bob Marley following his move to the US from Jamaica after he left to join his mother Cedella Booker. The mellowed-out song eases the listener into the world of Catch a Fire with a soft 'one drop' reggae beat, Bob Marley's lilting vocals and typically socially conscious lyrics.
