"Change" was allegedly the first song ever written by Blind Melon's late frontman Shannon Hoon, who tragically died of a drug overdose not long after its release. The early '90s hippie-rockers had formed in 1989 in Los Angeles and signed to Capitol Records in 1991, with their self-titled debut following in 1992. An introspective, soul-searching tune powered by dual guitars, mandolin, and Shannon Hoon's distinctive, octave-scaling voice, "Change" was one of the highlights of the band's debut. Shannon Hoon dedicated "Change" to the late Kurt Cobain during Blind Melon's 1994 performance on The Late Show with David Letterman, weaving in additional lines that paid tribute to the Nirvana star. Shannon Hoon died a year later following a cocaine overdose. He was just 28. Owing to his mother's love of the song, his gravestone was poignantly inscribed with the following lines from "Change": "I know we can’t all stay here forever / So I want to write my words on the face of today and they’ll paint it".
