Black Sabbath's dirgy "Hand of Doom" is a song about heroin addiction, specifically referencing Vietnam veterans ("First, it was the bomb / Vietnam, napalm Disillusioning / You push the needle in / From life, you escape / Reality's black drape"). The track was contained on the band's second studio album, the landmark LP Paranoid, which was released in September 1970 via Vertigo Records in England and Warner Bros. Records in the US. The career-defining record spawned some of Black Sabbath's most well-known songs including "Iron Man," "War Pigs" and the title track, which became the band's only Top 20 hit, getting to number four in the UK charts. Paranoid is considered one of heavy metal's most trailblazing and significant albums, casting an enduring shadow over the genre for decades to come, and giving Black Sabbath a number one album in the UK and number 12 in the US at the time of its release.
