Bing Crosby unabashedly revels in the cosiness of Christmas with this sentimental fireside standard originally written by the lyricist Kim Gannon and composer Walter Kent (who also composed "(There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover," with the lyricist Nat Burton). The much-loved baritone crooner recorded his version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas (If Only in My Dreams),"—which was crafted in tribute to soldiers stationed overseas during World War II who longed to be home at Christmas time—in 1943 for Decca Records, a year after the release of the Irving Berlin-penned "White Christmas." He duly cracked the top ten with the melancholic song (which ends with the heartbreaking line: "I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams"). "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was later recorded by the likes of Perry Como (1946), Frank Sinatra (1957) and a stream of other artists.
