One of the more unlikely success stories to emerge during the golden age of soul, influential Scottish funk troupe Average White Band (AWB) met on home soil as students in Dundee and assembled in London in 1972, introducing themselves the following year as the opening act at Eric Clapton’s Rainbow Theatre comeback gig. Their debut album, Show Your Hand, arrived that same year to little fanfare but their self-titled sophomore LP of 1974 helped to put them on the map, cooking up a chart-topping hit in “Pick Up the Pieces”. Heavy-hearted ballad “Cloudy” materialised in 1975 as one of the softer confections on the horns-brightened funk voyage of third full-length Cut the Cake, which was their first LP recorded without AWB's original drummer Robbie McIntosh, who tragically died of a heroin overdose in 1974, and featured Average White Band's first Black member in their replacement drummer Steve Ferrone.
