Combining the classic tropes of heavy metal with a more contemporary approach influenced by pop music, American metal band Avenged Sevenfold have been able to break through as one of the premier modern bands making heavy, aggressive rock music. “Welcome to the Family” is a song from the band’s fifth studio album Nightmare (2009). Lyrically, “Welcome to the Family” questions the need for aggression and hostility, while attempting to create a safe umbrella for all their fans to congregate under. The song was largely written by late drummer James Owen Sullivan, also known as The Rev, who passed away prior to the album’s recording. The song was then finished by lead singer M. Shadows. Like the rest of Nightmare, “Welcome to the Family” was produced by Mike Elizondo. It peaked at Number 10 on the US Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. It was also later made available as downloadable content for the video game Rock Band 3.
