"Buried Alive" is a plaintive ballad from Avenged Sevenfold’s fifth studio album Nightmare (2010), which marked their first without drummer James “The Reverend” Sullivan, who died from an overdose in 2009. On the track, M.Shadows' emotive voice collides into the gloom as he dispenses lines like, "Hey, I can't live in here for another day / Darkness has kept the light concealed / Grim as ever / Hold onto faith as I dig another grave / Meanwhile, the mice endure the wheel / Real as ever." "Buried Alive" is a song of two halves, moving through guitar and strings that switch gears and explode into a whirlwind of guitar-powered metal fury. Nightmare, which was released as a tribute to the late James “The Reverend” Sullivan (the album cover shows a tombstone that reads "FOREVER" with the emphasis on "REV") seized the number one spot on the Billboard 200 in the United States and was later certified platinum by the RIAA.
