In the early 2000s, members of legendary 90s rock bands Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden joined forces to form the supergroup Audioslave. Bursting onto the rock scene with their critically acclaimed debut album Audioslave (2002), the group combined elements of each act to create something entirely new. "I Am the Highway" is one of the songs from said debut, also released as the fourth promotional single. Continuing in the grand rock and roll tradition of “road songs,” “I Am the Highway” features lyrics about getting away from it all and breaking out from a negative relationship by traveling far away. The song was written by Tom Morello, Chris Cornell, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk. Like the rest of Audioslave’s self-titled debut, “I Am the Highway” was produced by Rick Rubin. The song peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard US Mainstream Rock chart, Number 3 on the Billboard US Alternative Airplay chart, as well as Number 66 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
