The incredibly popular show tune "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)" was written by American composer Irving Berlin for the 1946 Broadway stage musical Annie Get Your Gun. The play is a fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter that participated in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, and portrays her romantic relationship with marksman Frank E. Butler. The song sets the stage for a sharpshooting duel between the two protagonists, who constantly claim they can outperform each other in a wide array of increasingly complex tasks. Even though it was originally performed by Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton, who starred in the original 1946 Broadway production, "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)" was recorded several times throughout the years by artists like Bing Crosby, Dick Haymes, and The Andrews Sisters (1947), Doris Day and Robert Goulet (1963), and, more recently, Barbra Streisand and Melissa McCarthy in 2016.
