Believe it or not, the 1980s-defining anthem "True Colors" was originally a piano-driven, gospel-tinged ballad about songwriter Billy Steinberg's mother. Written in tandem with composer Tom Kelly, "True Colors" was first rejected by singer Anne Murray and then offered to Cyndi Lauper, who completely revamped the song into the stark, atmospheric powerhouse of a song we now know. Originally featured in her 1986 blockbuster album of the same name, "True Colors" is the only song in the LP that she didn't help to write. It was also her last Number 1 hit single in the United States. "True Colors" earned Cyndi Lauper a nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Annual Grammy Awards and was later covered by English drummer/singer Phil Collins, who included it in his compilation album ...Hits in 1998. Almost 30 years after its release, singer Justin Timberlake and actress Anna Kendrick recorded a version of "True Colors" for the soundtrack of the 2016 animated film Trolls.
