“Journey to the Past” is a song from the 1997 animated musical film Anastasia. It was written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. The version in the film was performed by singer Liz Callaway, who provided the singing voice for all of Anastasia’s songs throughout the voice (actress Meg Ryan provided her speaking voice). The film is a fictionalized version of the legend that Grand Duchess Anastasia was able to escape the execution of her family. At the moment in the story where the title character sings “Journey to the Past,” she is a young amnesiac who is ready to venture out into the world for the first time, possibly even discovering the truth about her past. R&B singer Aaliyah also recorded a version of the song, which was released as a single. The original song was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1998. “Journey to the Past” also appears in the stage musical adaptation of the film and was recorded by actress Christy Altomare for the Broadway cast album.
