It is curious how some songs make it in the holiday canon despite not making any specific references to Christmas. Such is the case of "Sleigh Ride," a light orchestra standard written by American composer Leroy Anderson. Ironically enough, the winter-themed song was conceived during a heatwave in July 1946 and was finished two years later. The first orchestral recording of "Sleigh Ride" was issued in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra, but it was The Ronettes' cover that took the song to new heights of popularity, becoming the most widely recognized rendition in recent history and charting yearly in Billboard's Top Ten U.S. Holiday 100 since its release in 1963. Other artists who have covered the song include jazz chanteuse Ella Fitzgerald, brother-and-sister duo The Carpenters, and contemporary Christian music singer Amy Grant, who included it in her first Christmas LP A Christmas Album in 1983.
