Released on August 14, 2009, Alice in Chains' "Check My Brain" is the lead single from the band's fourth studio album, Black Gives Way to Blue. It was also Alice in Chain's first commercial single since the release of "Fear the Voices" in 1999. Written by lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell about his move to California in 2003, "Check My Brain" was first teased via a 30-second sample on August 12, 1999, and officially released two days later. Featuring the band's traditional combo of hard-stomping, downtuned guitars and haunting vocal harmonies, the song was met with great critical acclaim and soared to the top of Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart, becoming their first single to ever do so. The following year, "Check My Brain" received a nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. In 2011, the song was featured in the season 4 premiere of the Showtime series Californication.
