Maintain your rhythm while on vacation

Train your ear with active listening

Training your ear can help you understand what you play. As a singer, this may translate to singing on pitch, while for musicians it may allow you to tune your instrument and improvise better. The goal in active listening is to dissect what is happening in the music. Listen and identify instruments, the harmony, melody, rhythm, etc. Once you've succeeded at tuning in to the different elements, try taking it to the next level by imitating what you hear.

Isolate the track

Active listening to an overall piece is indeed advantageous, but honing in on a specific instrument or the vocals alone brings its own benefits. Isolating a particular track using a Custom Backing Track will help you to understand the track's role, and in turn your own, in the overall piece. Once you understand the individual track, you can then add the remaining instruments in order to get the big picture. Learn how to isolate tracks on Karaoke Version.

Get inspired and change it up

The music world is your oyster: thousands of songs, a variety of categories, there’s plenty of inspiration! Listening to new musical genres can aid in expanding your musical awareness and push you to test your capabilities. If you normally listen and practice with Rock, try listening to Jazz for example. Put it into action and try improvising what you hear, you’ll realize that you'll quickly push the envelope and improve.

How do you practice when you are on the road?

I play guitar. This advice is very helpful in learning how to listen for specifics on what you are playing after you learn the melody.
