The Cult earned leather-studded glam points for Sweet Soul Sister”, a rock-solid cut from their hit-laden fourth studio album, Sonic Temple, also home to "Fire Woman" and "Edie (Ciao Baby)". Written by The Cult's Ian Astbury in Paris, the song thematically draws on the so-called Americanisation of Europe. "Several images sprang to mind as I was writing this song, it was kind of an observation of how European youth is becoming somewhat reluctantly Americanized," said Ian Astbury. "You know the references to the 'The Star-Spangled Banner.' But again with all my lyrics, I like to leave them open to people's interpretations and hope that people find themselves inside my songs." Sonic Temple was the last album recorded by the UK rockers with their longtime bassist Jamie Stewart, who parted ways with The Cult in 1990, and it was also the first to feature former Hall & Oates (and then-current) Bryan Adams's drummer, Mickey Curry.
