UK pop band New Order is one of the most important bands in the synth-pop and new wave movement. Starting their career as the influential post-punk outfit Joy Division, the group brought a brighter, cleaner, more upbeat sound to their work as New Order. Age of Consent is one of their early songs where they were first breaking away from the Joy Division sound, appearing on their 1983 album Power, Corruption, and Lies. It is built around a repeating pattern played on Peter Hook’s bass and propelled forward by the band’s trademark nervous and kinetic drum sounds. Though New Order would go on to pioneer several recording techniques, this song is relatively unadorned and relies on the group’s classic post-punk instrumentation, with fragmented lyrics that appear to depict a troubled romantic relationship. Age of Consent was written by Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris, and Gillian Gilbert. It was also produced by the band.
