It was included in their fourth album Three for Love, released in 1980. The song was issued as a single on May 25, 1981, and rapidly climbed to Number 17 on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart. Written by lead singer Howard Hewett with songwriter Dana Meyers, it was the third single released from Three for Love after "Full of Fire" and "Make That Move." A silky-smooth R&B ballad featuring sultry instrumentation and pristine vocal harmonies, "This Is for the Lover in You" helped its parent album reach Number 40 on the Billboard 200 and Number 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
